The Coaching Process - 4 Development Areas
In order to develop a well rounded production leader, we will focus on 4 main areas: personal growth & leadership, team development, gear & equipment, and technical skills. We will start by assessing where Jackson’s strengths and create plans for growth in each area. Here are more detailed descriptions of each area:
Personal Growth & Leadership
This aspect of growth and leadership is taking a closer look at your identity and his calling from God both individually as a disciple of Jesus, and specifically at how this relates to your ministry in your local church. Specific items we’ll look at in leadership include but aren’t limited to:
- Self-leadership: time management, rest (sabbath), working in ministry while actively cultivating a deeper relationship with Jesus.
- Collaborating with staff and others: leading out and up (the ability to communicate personal and ministry needs to others on church staff)
- Understanding the unique challenges of working in production ministry (working behind the scenes, cultivating both high technical skills and leadership skills, responding to criticism/complaints)
- Utilizing various work and personality typing tools (enneagram, working genius, etc) to help you better understand yourself and calling as a production leader
Team Development
In addition to personal leadership, we’ll spend dedicated time growing your skills in team development. Together, we will:
- Create systems for recruiting, managing, and training a volunteer production team
- Explore how your personality and leadership style specifically apply to leading volunteers
- Navigate the complex balance of striving for technical excellence while relying on volunteers
- Cultivate a culture of volunteering which engages volunteers both in technical ministry and a deeper connection to the church and walking with Jesus. (Production volunteering isn’t just about cool gear, it’s actually about discipleship.)
Gear & Equipment
A large aspect of leadership and managing production is having a strong knowledge of AVL systems. We’ll work together to make sure you have a strong understanding and confidence of the current systems at play in your facilities. This includes:
- Troubleshooting skills for real time worship issues
- Empowering volunteers to use technical systems
- Collaborating with outside AV companies (where applicable) to maintain and support technical systems
- Budget management and collaboration with other staff members for financial planning
Technical skills
A huge part of production ministry is the technical skills and abilities - this is the craft of production. It’s not just about having the right gear, it’s about having a nuanced approach to how it’s used. Production done well is an art form, and I’ll serve as your guide to help develop your craft, much like any other artist would hone theirs. Some examples would include:
- Audio - Mixing, compression, gain structure, ear training
- Video - presentation, live video, lighting, video directing, camera operation
- Lighting - lighting for set and stage, understanding color temperature, visual contrast
The Coaching Arrangement
To implement development in these 4 areas, we will follow the structure below:
- 4x 60-minute coaching sessions per month for a period of 3 months.(Ideally 1/week, but allowing flexibility for travel and the ability to book double sessions for deeper dives.)
- Each coaching session will include the following:
- Personal check-in time
- Review - looking back on the previous week’s homework and debriefing how rehearsal/ services went
- A deeper dive on a specific topic, either related to current areas of development or from reviewing what happened last Sunday
- Providing specific homework to continue growth and experience for discussion in the following session
