I’m excited to finally start documenting the journey of creating my own studio shed—a dedicated space for my creative work. In this first video, I share the beginnings of the project and what led me to build this shed.
With two kids, two dogs, and two cats, finding a consistent workspace at home has always been a challenge. Over the years, I’ve had to move my setup from room to room, never quite having a space that felt truly mine. As my family grew, it became clear that I needed a dedicated space for meetings, coaching calls, and focused creative work.
“I’ve always needed a space that could be mine.”
I started looking at pre-built options online, including companies like Studio Shed that offer fully installed, turnkey sheds. While appealing, the cost for the size and finish I wanted was around $75,000—way more than I wanted to spend. That led me to a hybrid approach: sourcing a quality base shed from a local company, Valley Structures, and customizing it myself.
This shed is a 12×12 model with specific modifications I requested: a metal roof, real doors and windows, and placement adjustments to make it more functional and livable than a standard backyard shed.
At this stage, the shed is finished but mostly empty. The interior already feels surprisingly polished, with great natural light and thoughtful touches like a wide door with a side light for moving in larger items in the future. One thing I particularly love is how the window with a built-in screen provides ventilation even before installing HVAC—a small but meaningful win for comfort while I plan the next steps.
This video captures the very beginning of the studio shed journey. There’s still plenty to do—from insulation and buildout to fully setting up a creative workspace—but I’m thrilled to start shaping this space.
I’ll continue to document the process here, sharing updates and insights along the way. Thanks for following along, and I can’t wait to show how this shed transforms into a space for focused, meaningful creative work.
